JEE Main photo and signature size

JEE Main gives you a generous KB range and no pixel requirement at all, which sounds easier and catches people for a different reason: a phone photograph often lands above 200 KB, and compressing it hard enough to fit destroys the face NTA wants to see clearly. Resize first, then compress.

Check your own notification first. JEE Main is the opposite of most exams here: NTA states the physical size and the KB range but does not publish a pixel requirement, so every pixel figure you find online is somebody else’s conversion rather than a rule. The KB ranges are wide and well agreed — 10 to 200 KB for the photograph, 10 to 100 KB for the signature.

What resizing will not fix

NTA requires the photograph to show about 80 percent of your face including the ears, without a mask, against a white background, and it forbids edited or filtered images. It also asks for the signature in running hand — block capitals and digital signatures are rejected. Those are rules about the picture you take, not about the file you make from it.

Already tried, and it was refused?

A portal almost never says which rule you broke. Drop the file you tried to upload into the rejection checker and it reports on each rule separately — format, pixel size, the maximum, the minimum and the DPI — so you fix the one that is actually wrong instead of guessing. It reads the file and changes nothing.

Have the notification in front of you?

Then you do not need the figures above at all. Copy the upload instructions straight out of it and paste them into the box on the home page — it reads the pixel sizes, the KB range and the DPI out of the text and sets the tools to exactly what your notification says. That is always right, even when a published figure has gone stale.

Notes on these figures

  • NTA specifies 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm and a KB range, but no pixel size. At 200 DPI that is 276 x 354 pixels.
  • Around 3.5 cm x 1.5 cm, which at 200 DPI is 276 x 118 pixels.
  • If a minimum KB is given, set it too — a clean photograph often compresses below it, and the tool pads the file to reach it without touching the picture.
