YouTube wants a thumbnail at 1280 by 720 pixels and under 2 MB, and quietly rescales anything else — which is why a thumbnail that looked sharp in your editor can arrive soft and letterboxed. Setting both exactly is the whole job, and it is the same job as an exam photo with different numbers.
Good to know
- 1280 x 720 is 16:9. Any other shape gets bars added or edges cut, decided by YouTube rather than by you.
- Most people see thumbnails far smaller than 1280 wide. Check your text is readable at about a fifth of the size before uploading.

My thumbnail is over 2 MB. What now?
Use JPG rather than PNG. A photographic thumbnail as PNG is often several megabytes and looks no better as a JPG at this size.
Why does my text look blurry on phones?
Because a thumbnail is displayed at a fraction of its real size. Fewer words and larger text beats a sentence that vanishes.
Does the file size affect quality on YouTube?
YouTube re-encodes it anyway. Start from a clean 1280 x 720 and do not compress harder than you need to.
