About PNG to WEBP
PNG is the honest choice for graphics and the expensive one for file size. WEBP offers a way out: it keeps transparency, as PNG does, but compresses far more aggressively, so logos and interface graphics on a website can shrink substantially without visibly changing.
Good to know
- Transparency is preserved, which is the main reason to pick WEBP over JPG here.
- Savings on graphics and screenshots are often large, sometimes more than half.
- For a logo you will send to other people, keep a PNG copy as well.
Questions
Does transparency survive?
Yes. WEBP supports an alpha channel, so transparent areas stay transparent.
Is WEBP lossless like PNG?
It can be, and it also offers a lossy mode that is much smaller. For website graphics the lossy mode is usually indistinguishable.
Should I convert my whole site?
For images you serve to browsers, it is one of the easier page-speed wins available.
What about files I send to clients?
Send PNG. Not every recipient can open WEBP in their usual software.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs inside your browser using your own device. Your file never leaves it, and we never see or store it. You can even disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.
Is it really free?
Yes. No account, no daily limit, no watermark on your files. The site is paid for by ads.
