JPG to PNG Free

Convert JPG pictures to PNG at their original size. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so the file is larger than the same picture as JPG.

Free, and staying free. No account, no daily limit, no watermark, nothing uploaded. Keeping it up does cost something (the domain, and the AI that reads your notification) and a contribution goes there. Passing the site to someone filling the same form helps just as much, and costs nothing at all.

About JPG to PNG

Going from JPG to PNG will not restore quality already lost, because JPG discarded that detail when it was first saved. What it does give you is a lossless container: from this point on the file can be edited and re-saved as often as you like without degrading further, which is why designers convert before starting work.

Good to know

  • Expect the PNG to be considerably larger. It stores every pixel exactly instead of approximating.
  • JPG compression artefacts around text and edges are copied over faithfully. PNG preserves them rather than fixing them.
  • Worth doing before repeated editing; not worth doing just to store a photo.

Questions

Will this improve my JPG quality?

No. The detail JPG threw away is gone for good. PNG only stops any further loss from happening.

Why is my PNG so much bigger?

JPG is lossy and PNG is lossless. A photograph in PNG is often several times the size, which is the cost of keeping every pixel.

Does my JPG gain transparency?

No. PNG supports transparency, but a JPG has none to carry over, so the background stays as it is.

When is this actually worth it?

Before editing a picture repeatedly, or when a site or tool specifically requires PNG.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs inside your browser using your own device. Your file never leaves it, and we never see or store it. You can even disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.

Is it really free?

Yes. No account, no daily limit, no watermark on your files. The site is paid for by ads.
