GIF to PNG Free
Convert GIF pictures to PNG at their original size. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so the file is larger than the same picture as JPG.
How to use it
- Choose one or more images, or drag them in.
- Set the options on the right. The result updates as you change them.
- Check the result, then press Download.
About GIF to PNG
PNG was created as the successor to GIF for still images, and it wins on every count for that purpose: millions of colours instead of 256, smoother transparency, and no patent history. For a still GIF (a logo, an icon, a diagram) PNG is simply the better container.
Good to know
- Transparency is preserved, and PNG handles partial transparency that GIF renders as a hard jagged edge.
- Animation is not preserved. Only the first frame is converted.
- For flat graphics the PNG is often no larger, and sometimes smaller, than the GIF.
Questions
Can I keep the animation?
No. PNG stores a single image, so you get the first frame.
Why convert a still GIF at all?
PNG supports far more colours and much better transparency, and is the modern expectation for a still graphic.
Will the edges look better?
Often yes, because GIF transparency is all-or-nothing while PNG allows partial transparency for smooth edges.
Does it lose quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so everything in the GIF frame is preserved exactly.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs inside your browser using your own device. Your file never leaves it, and we never see or store it. You can even disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.
Is it really free?
Yes. No account, no daily limit, no watermark on your files. The site is paid for by ads.
