About Circle Crop
Round profile pictures are everywhere, but most platforms apply the circle themselves and crop badly. Making the circle yourself means you choose what sits inside it, and the corners come out genuinely transparent rather than white, so the result sits cleanly on any background.
Good to know
- The result is a PNG, because JPG cannot store transparency and would fill the corners with white.
- Centre the face slightly above the middle. A circle cuts more from the corners than you expect.
- For a site avatar, export at least 400x400 so it stays sharp on high-resolution screens.
Questions
Why is the download bigger than the original?
PNG is lossless and stores transparency, so it is larger than JPG. That is the price of transparent corners.
Can I get a circle on a coloured background?
Crop to a circle here, then use Add Border to Image, or place the PNG over any background in an editor.
Does it work on a rectangular photo?
Yes. The circle is taken from the centre, so crop first if your subject sits off to one side.
Does transparency survive upload?
On platforms that accept PNG, yes. Some convert everything to JPG, which fills the corners with white.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
