About Brightness & Contrast
Documents photographed indoors come out dark and flat, and a scan of an old page often looks washed out. Raising brightness lifts the whole image; raising contrast pushes the light parts lighter and the dark parts darker, which is what makes text separate from paper.
Good to know
- For a document, contrast usually helps more than brightness. It is the separation you want, not overall lightness.
- Pushing either too far throws away detail permanently, turning shadows to black and highlights to white.
- Small adjustments applied to a good original beat large adjustments rescuing a bad one.
Questions
My scanned document is grey. What should I change?
Increase contrast first, and add a little brightness only if the page still looks dull. For a signature specifically, the Signature tool does this automatically.
Can I recover a very dark photo?
Partly. Brightening reveals what the camera captured, but where it recorded nothing there is nothing to recover, and noise becomes obvious.
Does adjusting reduce quality?
The adjustment itself is fine; saving as JPG re-encodes once. Extreme settings lose detail at the ends of the range.
Can I adjust several photos at once?
Yes, and the same settings are applied to each.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs inside your browser using your own device. Your file never leaves it, and we never see or store it. You can even disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.
Is it really free?
Yes. No account, no daily limit, no watermark on your files. The site is paid for by ads.
