About BMP to JPG
BMP stores every pixel completely uncompressed, which is why a modest image can occupy many megabytes. It survives mainly in old Windows software and some scanner output. Converting to JPG typically cuts the size by ten times or more with no visible difference on a photograph.
Good to know
- The size reduction here is the largest of any conversion on the site, because BMP applies no compression at all.
- Old scanners and legacy Windows programs are the usual source of BMP files.
- Nothing will refuse the resulting JPG, whereas plenty of modern sites refuse BMP.
Questions
Why is my BMP so enormous?
BMP stores each pixel in full with no compression. Width times height times bytes per pixel is roughly the file size.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
Commonly ten to twenty times, depending on the content.
Will I notice a quality loss?
On a photograph, almost never. On a screenshot full of text, JPG softens the edges, so PNG is the better target.
Do upload forms accept BMP?
Rarely. JPG or PNG is nearly always what they ask for.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs inside your browser using your own device. Your file never leaves it, and we never see or store it. You can even disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.
Is it really free?
Yes. No account, no daily limit, no watermark on your files. The site is paid for by ads.
